EDC 102 Final Project PageEDC 102 Issue: Sex Education I. Description of Problem or Issue Sex education is a very controversial subject amongst school districts. It is constantly being debated whether sex education should be taught or whether children should take abstinence pledges. It is also debated whether or not the government should fund sex education programs and how much children should be informed in sex education programs. Teen pregnancy is on the rise and it is very controversial whether a proper sex education would alleviate that problem or not.
II. Research Summary Brittany found that sex education is very controversial. It is very hard to determine what the appropriate amount of sex education entails and how that education should be funded. It is always being debated whether the children should be forced to take abstinence pledges or be educated on sexual reproduction and to what extent they should be taught. It is also being debated whether or not teen pregnancy is related to knowledge on sex education.
Kat found that it is statistically proven that sex education is effective. Studies show that although it is more effective than not having any knowledge on sex the difference is not great. There are three main methods of teaching sex education; abstinence only, abstinence first and comprehensive. She also found that different schools teach different percentages of sex education.
Erika found that teachers find it more effective to teach comprehensive sex education than any form of abstinence. She found that the government is still deciding whether or not to eliminate abstinence only programs because of its large cost. It also talks about the difference between schools sex education programs in different states, some states have a required amount of classes and some states have no requirements.
Alexa found that the U.S. has the highest rates of teen pregnancy and births. Teen pregnancy has an extremely high annually cost. The majority of unmarried pregnant teenagers rarely finish schooling and it becomes a problem for the economy. Students who receive comprehensive sex education are statistically proven to have a lesser chance of getting pregnant opposed to those taught abstinence or those students who received no sex education. Typically those in more urban areas have a higher pregnancy rate.
III. Group Product Overview In our project we will be going over how effective sex education can be, what makes of an effective sex education and its pros and cons. We will present the current issues involving sex education and what parents think is appropriate in a sex education lesson. We will go over teen pregnancy and statistics to prove that sex education is effective. Furthermore, we will include different graphs to compare sex education in the United States to sex education in other countries.
